In the second of today's shows leading up to Pride Weekend and continuing director's month on IR4MCU, Alex Fitch talks to British director Duncan Roy about his new movie. Following his terrific debut A.K.A., Roy returns to the topic of the social classes (albeit relocated to the New York art scene) with his adaptation of Oscar Wilde's classic novel...
N.B. Dorian Gray is showing next at The Cambridge film festival (download a PDF of the programme - it's on page 31) on the 12th & 14th of July...

Patricia Jeres
In the first of today's two shows scheduled in the run-up to Pride weekend Alex Fitch interviews Patricia Jeres about gay representaion in comics both on the page and behind the writer / artist's pen. Having read the latter; anyone feeling like going to Pride this weekend should know that Christian Voice are going to be picketing the event, so why not go down with a home made sign that quotes other anachronistic gems from Leviticus like:

Chapter 19 -
Verse 19: ...thou shalt not sow thy field with mingled seed: neither shall a garment mingled of linen and woollen come upon thee.
Verse 27: Ye shall not round the corners of your heads, neither shalt thou mar the corners of thy beard.
Chapter 20 -
Verse 9: For every one that curseth his father or his mother shall be surely put to death.

...just a thought.

We apologise for this distruption to the usual schedule...

No show this week, I'm afraid...

Richard has this to say on the subject:

Due to structural damage to the studio ceiling, we are obliged to close the studio effective immediately until further notice. All programmes from Thursday 19 April are cancelled including pre-recorded material. The scale of the work we need to undertake over the next few days will leave little time to arrange repeats. The nightloop will be the sole broadcast during this period. Many apologies for this. We have taken expert health & safety advice concerning this matter and they have advised us to take this course as a matter of urgency.
We hope to move to a new premises at the very earliest opportunity.
Until then, please bear with a schedule of repeats and disrupted programming.

If you're wondering whether the title of tonight's show is a contradiction in terms... Well, you'll just have to tune in to find out!

Tonight's show: Scoring Silent Movies

It's the one year anniversary of "I'm ready for my close-up" (I'll track down a copy of Richard's first show on William Greaves soon for podcasting) - so to celebrate the occasion we have a couple of shows about the birth of cinema and how it is still relevant and appreciated today.
Tonight, Alex Fitch is talking to Alex Hogg from the band Minima who are touring the country with a print of the 1928 film 'The Seashell and the Clergyman' written by Antonin Artaud. The film was infamously banned on first release in this country with the BBFC quoted as saying: "This film is so obscure as to have no apparent meaning. If there is a meaning, it is doubtless objectionable".
Minima provide a terrific new soundtrack to the film and there will be extracts in tonight's show which concludes with the start of an interview with Matthew Sweet, author of Silent Britain and Shepperton Babylon, and this will be continued next week.

To make the film more accessible to modern viewers Toby has been involved with the rediscovery of the film's original score and the commissioning of a new one, while Andrew has made a documentary re-editing the scenes of the movie into the order in which they were filmed to give the audience a unique insight into the making of the world's first feature length documentary.

Podcast: The current state of Comics

Originally broadcast 19th October 2006: Alex Fitch interviews Kev F Sutherland (comics writer and commentator) about such topics as: Hollywood and the media's fascination with comic books which contrasts with diminishing sales in shops. From appreciation of writers like Alan Moore and Chris Ware in The Guardian to comics based on TV shows and by TV writers, there seems to be cultural awareness of comics, but the question is: how do we get more adults and (more importantly) children reading this great art form again?
